ON THIS DAY in 1987, Mark Ashton, former General Secretary of the YCL and a founder of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, died in hospital due to complications from AIDS.
Today we mark the 84th anniversary of the Battle of Jarama during the Spanish Civil War, where the forces of the Spanish Republic, together with the newly organised International Brigade, halted the efforts of Francisco Franco’s Nationalists to cut off Madrid from the rest of Spain.
