The Executive Committee of the Young Communist League has released the following statement to mark International Workers Memorial Day 2020.
Britain will fall silent today to remember all those who have lost their lives at work.
Today is made more poignant as we are in the midst of a pandemic. A pandemic in which tens of thousands of workers across the world have died.
More will fall ill, more will risk their lives and more will die.
Governments and employers must be held to account for their failures to protect workers.
Their negligence has cost lives.
The working class will not forget this.
Today we should also take the time to reflect on how important strong trade unions are. Union workplaces are safer workplaces.
On this collective day of remembrance and solidarity we demand:
No more preventable deaths at work!
Make PPE widely available!
Pay rise for essential workers!
Above all we say: Remember the dead, organise in their memory.
