The Communist Party has declared its intention to collect the signatures and raise the money needed to get a Communist candidate on the ballot paper and in the election booklet for the West Midlands Mayoral election in May.
Voting takes place on Thursday 4th May 2017 and the Party hopes to stand Graham Stevenson the Party’s National Trade Union Organiser – a decision endorsed on Saturday 4th February by an aggregate meeting of West Midlands comrades and later the same afternoon by a meeting of the Party’s Midlands Committee, with the green light from the January meeting of the Party’s Executive Committee.
But it’s a massive challenge and we really need your support:
- We have to collect 100 signatures, at least 10 of which must come from each of the seven authorities (Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton).
- We need to raise thousands of pounds for the deposit and for the cost of the booklet to be delivered to all homes in which each candidate will have equal space.
The Midlands Committee hopes to get comrades involved in the campaign across all seven authorities and in the process to get Communist branches re-established in Wolverhampton and in the Black Country.
In the weeks to come we’ll be asking for help from not only from supporters in the West Midlands but beyond: collecting signatures; raising money; running street campaigns; leafletting; canvassing; and taking the campaign out into the movement where Graham will face – amongst other candidates – Blairite MEP Sion Simon, who won the Labour nomination on an anti-Corbyn platform.
