Robin Talbot, chair of the YCL, this week addressed a meeting on Venezuela at the University of Leicester, jointly organised by the Midlands YCL and the UoL Marxist Society. 🇻🇪 . COMMUNISTS CONDEMN 'BARBARIC AND CYNICAL' TURKISH INVASION 🕊🌍 Britain's Communists have condemned the Turkish invasion of north-east Syria as a 'blatant and barbaric violation of Syria's national sovereignty'. Carol Stavris told the Communist Party of Britain's political committee that such a flagrant breach of international and humanitarian law cannot go unchallenged. ‘In giving the green light to President Erdogan to bomb and invade this oil-rich region of Syria, US President Trump has double-crossed his Kurdish allies there and undermined the peace and stability process set in train by the multinational Syrian Constitutional Commission', she declared. ‘Trump's prime intention is to draw Erdogan's authoritarian regime back fully into the NATO fold after its recent rapprochement with Russia, but the tragic consequences will be felt by the peoples of all the ethnic groups of the region, as well as the Kurdish minority'. The CP political committee dismissed as 'utterly false and cynical' the Turkish pretext for this latest invasion of Syrian territory as an 'anti-terrorist' exercise intended to bring peace and stability to the region. Ms Stavris called upon the British government to demand UN sanctions against the Erdogan regime and the immediate withdrawal of all Turkish forces from Syria. ‘Instead of opening another bloody chapter in Western imperialism's history of violence and subversion in the Middle East, Britain and other Western powers should respect the sovereignty of the Syrian people and their government', she insisted. The YCL calls on workers and students to support the anti-invasion demonstrations taking place up and down the country this week ✊

Happy birthday New China! 🎉🇨🇳🇭🇰🇲🇴🎉 The YCL sends socialist greetings to the Peoples Republic of China on its anniversary today, the 70th anniversary of its foundation. The PRC has come a long way over the past 70 years, coming from a near feudal state, to a nation of skyscrapers and a world economic powerhouse. China has made significant contribution to the international movement, providing equipment and volunteers to multiple anti-imperialist and anti-colonial struggles worldwide. Today it still pushes for peace and co-operation world wide, through its attempts to restrain US and NATO military aggression, in Asia and in its recent assistance to Nepal and it's revolution. Over the past few years China has started playing an increasing role in the struggle against climate change, becoming the world's largest producer of renewable energy, reforesting an area the size of Ireland, introducing the world's largest fleet of electric buses, and significantly slashing it's carbon emissions, being set to meet its Paris agreement deadlines significantly earlier than any capitalist nation. We also salute the extraordinary efforts of the cadres of the Chinese Communist Party and Communist Youth League of China that have lead to the lifting of 600 million people from poverty, and the plans to eliminate all poverty in China in the coming years. Britain’s communists are working to change that. Our generation have only known austerity, war and a right wing media that whips up every form of discrimination in order to keep working people as divided as possible. Our school system is crumbling. Further and higher educational are once again becoming the preserve of the wealthy. Poverty pay and precariousness are the reality for increasing numbers of the youth. It’s no wonder that mental health problems seem to be increasing exponentially among our generation. Hopelessness is bound to be the result when every aspect of our lives are filled with difficulty and doubt. Finding a decent job, a home to live in and building towards a fulfilling and meaningful future are impossible under capitalism. The YCL says to the young workers and students of Britain that we can’t give in. Apathy is capitalism’s biggest tool in maintaining control. Working people shouldn’t give up on our dreams. We say the youth deserve a dignified life. We have to give up on capitalism. The only solution is to organise and to struggle, like the generations before us.
