All Eyes on Sudan! No to Imperialist War! Down with the Arsonists of War! Solidarity with All Progressive Forces of Sudan! Victory to the Sudanese Working Masses!

On the 80th Anniversary of the Founding of the Sudanese Communist Party, the Young Communist League extends its greetings and solidarity to the Sudanese Communist Party, the Sudanese Youth Union, and its national affiliations, the National Consensus Forces and the Forces for Freedom and Change.

Sudan is now in the third year of its brutal civil war, and the brunt of the war’s impacts fall on Sudanese civilians and workers – conservative estimates suggest that at least 12 million have been displaced. 25 million suffer from acute food insecurity, with 600,000 directly facing famine. 17 million children are without formal education, 3.2 million women and girls are subject to rape and sexual abuse, and it is estimated that around 30 million are in need of direct and immediate humanitarian assistance, more than half of the total population. The butchery in Khartoum, El-Fasher and El-Obeid are ever in the minds of progressive working people across the world. People are not just numbers or statistics however – we, the Young Communist League, join our fraternal parties and organisations in Sudan in calling for an immediate ceasefire, a comprehensive and enforced United Nations arms embargo on Sudan, cutting ties with belligerent states actively involved in fuelling the war and increased public focus on the plight of the Sudanese people and cause.

The Sudanese struggle against militarism draws back to colonial times with the founding of the Sudan Defence Force in 1925, a tool of the British colonial occupation to police the Sudanese population and supress all anti-colonial activity. In 1964, the Sudanese working class largely led by the Sudanese Communist Party and Sudanese Youth Union successfully overthrew the western-backed military junta of Ibrahim Abboud in the 1964 October Revolution. Again, the military rule of Omar Al-Bashir was overthrown in 2019 by mass demonstrations of Sudanese workers, civilians and youth. Sudanese history is marked by the struggle against militarism and violence, and we fully support the Sudanese Communist Party in their actions for a ceasefire in the present civil war.

The role of the Sudanese youth is especially important in this struggle. In the April 1985 Uprisings, the Sudanese Youth Union faced the forces of the Nimeiry government with their bare chests under intense persecution and threats of liquidation, symbolising the strength of the resistance amongst the Sudanese youth and providing critical support for the revolution that returned Sudan to civilian rule. In the words of Atef Abdullah: “The Sudanese Youth Union has provided an exemplary model in organising, managing demonstrations, and distributing leaflets, in line with all political and partisan tendencies that have made “civil disobedience” a weapon more vivid than bullets”. We constantly look to the examples of our comrades across the world and the lessons they teach us.

The struggle against imperialist violence in both Britain and Sudan, and all across the world, goes on – the British government has been actively complicit in the training and equipping of both the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces, both credibly accused of war crimes prior to British military and financial support, as well as providing diplomatic cover and weapons for the United Arab Emirates in its own imperialist intervention and extraction. Only when the indefensible war crimes of the RSF and UAE become so blatant do the fat cats in Westminster move a finger to distance themselves from the problem they helped create and still fuel to this day.

Imperialist war exclusively seeks to drive the working masses into poverty and misery, to supress revolutionary movements and to enrich the bourgeoisie warmongers and profiteers. The Young Communist League fully supports the Sudanese fight for national sovereignty, independence and peace. We call upon our fraternal parties and organisations to continue to campaign for a ceasefire, an internationally enforced UN arms embargo, a halt to all British government actions involved in prolonging the war and the cutting of military, financial and diplomatic ties between Britain and other belligerent nations, especially with the United Arab Emirates. We stand resolutely against imperialism and fascism, and for proletarian internationalism – no war but the class war!
