The Young Communist League condemns in the strongest terms this morning’s illegal and destructive attacks on Caracas, capital of the sovereign Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and host city for this year’s festival of the World Federation of Democratic Youth. Following months of extrajudicial murders of Caribbean civilians by the U.S military, this morning’s attacks constitute a further escalation and a blatant violation of international law, the fundamental right to self-determination and the United Nations charter. As news is still emerging, it is understood that deaths have been reported following these U.S strikes and unconfirmed reports of the outrageous kidnapping by the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. We affirm the right of the Venezuelan people to self-defence under UN Charter Chapter VII, Article 51 against this bloodthirsty armed aggression.
We echo the calls of our comrades in the PCV in condemning this war mongering and calling on all progressive and workers’ forces to mobilise in opposition to this. Furthermore, we demand that Keir Starmer and his government make it clear that they also condemn these criminal acts. In the week that he announced the introduction of ‘military gap years’, we reaffirm that Britain’s youth will not shed it’s blood, nor shed the blood of our working class brothers and sisters abroad for Exxon, Chevron, BP or other financiers – be they in Wall Street or Canary Wharf.
