Following the Young Communist League’s 51st All-Britain Congress, the newly elected YCL Central Committee met for the first time last week.
Under our Constitution the Central Committee is entrusted with putting into practise the decisions, policies and priorities of the Congress over the next two years and to continue the essential work of building the YCL.
The new Central Committee met on September 21st and as its first task elected new officers to serve the League in carrying out the decisions of Congress.
The new Central Committee thanked the Congress, and the outgoing Central Committee. In particular long time General Secretary Johnnie Hunter, and Chair Robin Talbot were thanked for their tireless service to the organisation over the past 5 years. The new Central Committee endeavours to do their utmost to carry out their duties with the energy and diligence expected of members of the YCL.
The Congress committed the League to continue and expand it’s work in communities, to struggle against imperialism for world peace, and to deepen its work within the trade union movement.
The YCL’s updated Constitution and the final Resolutions from the League’s 51st Congress will be published shortly, and a full list of new officers and their posts will be circulated internally.
Newly elected General Secretary Georgina Andrews stated “It is a privilege to be given the responsibility of leading our esteemed League. Our League serves as the militant youth wing of the Communist Party, fostering growth and development among young workers and students throughout Britain.
This Congress has taken place amidst an intensifying class struggle, in which we refuse to passively accept a bleak future dictated to us by the ruling class. Armed with a growingly militant trade union movement, and a burning desire for global peace, the Communist youth in Britain today are demonstrating the steadfast determination to fight the capitalist class to achieve socialism in our lifetime. Join the Young Communist League and Communist Party today to build the struggle for socialism!”
Newly elected Chair Dónal Thomas added “My election to the position of Chair is not a reward for working hard, but the demand for hard work. With a newly elected Central Committee, and congressional decisions informing the direction of the League, we are reinvigorated as a vanguard, and as the leadership of our class. Now is the opportunity for the new ideas of congress to be enacted and realised. The revolutionary optimism and energy within our membership and especially our Central Committee is unprecedented within our ranks.
By getting behind our new General Secretary, who has already outlined her exciting vision for the League, we can effect a level of discipline, diligence, and determination hitherto unseen. Through congress and our robust democratic processes, we have done the easy part. Now is the time for each of us to step up and put our heads down. With constant fruitless debate and division on the ‘left’ the Young Communist League will offer a meaningful and effective alternative.”
For peace, jobs and socialism!
