The YCL is one of over 180 democratic and anti-imperialist youth organisations from more than 100 countries that are affiliated to the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), which organises solidarity campaigns and events on issues such as anti-fascism, anti-militarism and freedom and justice for Palestine, as well as bringing together progressive young people from all over the world.

WFDY organises the World Festival of Youth and Students (WFYS) every four years and has consultative status with the United Nations (ECOSOC) and a relationship with UNESCO.

The organisation was founded at the World Youth Conference on 10 November 1945 and pledged to build international unity and friendship, eliminate fascism, maintain a peace in which young lives would never again be wasted, and fight for social progress.

The League has one-on-one relationships with Communist and workers’ organisations of many countries, including those domiciled in Britain, and participates in a variety of international solidarity work such as with Cuba, Palestine, Venezuela and the current and former territories of the British Empire and United Kingdom.

The League especially welcomes young Communists who come from abroad to live, study and work in Britain into its ranks.

In addition, the YCL regularly organises delegations to international events combining fun with Communist and progressive politics, such as the World Festival of Youth and Students, the Fête de l’Humanité (France) and Avante (Portugal).
